Category: Let's talk
Hi everyone,
Anybody on here besides me have hotmail? I have this little issue with hotmail where you have to match the characters or numbers in the pictures to help protect the inbox against spam and they have the audio and I'm typing in the numbers as I hear them, but it keeps giving me error messages saying the characters you typed must be in the picture please try again. Help, please! I'm frustrated with this thing! I've been fighting with it since last night and I'm still at it.
Plus my mail box is pretty filled up with like almost 60 messages and I don't want my address to crash. I can't check email unless I do this.
Hi, MQ. Yes, I have hotmail too. It's impossible to type the characters at the same time they're being read to you, because if I remember correctly, the listening and the typing are done in two separate windows. I always took my Note-taker, wrote down the characters as the audio read them, then went to the edit box and entered them using what I'd written in the note-taker. Not that you need a note-taker, a Braillewriter, slate and stylus, or pen and paper would do just fine too. Point is, write the characters down separately, then enter them into the box. Hope that helps.
I agree, that can be really frustrating. First off, those damn numbers can be hard to understand. And, as has been pointed out, the listening is in one window and the typing in another.
I open up a third window with my favorite text editor (in my case it's textpad, but it could be notepad or wordpad). Then type the numbers as I hear them, and when I think I've got them all right, I copy the results to my clipboard and paste it into the typing window.
Good luck.
Bob
When you type in the numbers in spaces or do you type them all together. I type them all together and instead of jaws reading the numbers in singule digits it'll read like in the billions and trillions I think that's why I'm getting the errors after I type them.
No, I don't think so. If I remember right, it's just one big number.
Bob
Oh I finally got it fixed my BF's sister had to help me with the characters cause jaws wouldn''t read them plus it didn't have it in the audio.
Glad you got it fixed, MQ. But you'll probably be faced with it again, as MSN often uses that for a security verifier.
Medical queen, you resorted to the sighted solution, which is what I do when I'm desperate. A completely acceptible solution. Now, go empty out that inbox quick. <lol>
However, in post 7 you said, "Oh I finally got it fixed my BF's sister had to help me with the characters cause jaws wouldn''t read them plus it didn't have it in the audio."
What do you mean it didn't have it in the audio. If they are asking us to do something and giving us erroneous information, then this should be brought to their attention. Conspiracy theorists would have a blast with this one. Are they trying to deliberately keep blind people out?
Please contact microsoft about this. Now that you are in, help others who are not to be given a fair shake. If you do follow up, please let us know how it goes.
Just my thoughts,
Bob
Bob,
In the picture when someone sighted looks at it it has some letters plus the numbers. In the audio they only give the numbers, and whenever I try to follow the audio and type the numbers being read to me I get this error message at the top that'll say, the characters you typed must match the characters in the picture, but it only reads the numbers and I'm typing it so I'm like what's the problem? And I typed it correctly and everything. I even tried to write it down in microsoft word and copied the results in the edit box and it still does no good so all that time I was banging my head on what I should do. I thought about changing my address to another email server but I stopped and thought and said to myself how will be able to transfer my email I saved into another address? So I just said forget it and got somebody to help me which I really didn't want to depend on because I don't always have the right people to help me all the time but I did the best I could do with it.
You're right, it's ridiculous and stupid to put us through these hoops, please send them an email telling of your experience, otherwise they'll claim they never knew it. My bet is that the response you get will be the same as mine: none. But then you will know you did your bit to right a wrong.
Sometimes virtue is truly its only just reward.
Bob
Do you happen to have the address I can email them at?
uh, no. sorry. Probably support@hotmail.com.
Bob
Okay: this is the best solution. It will continue to happen, because as sister Dawn has said they do a security check every now and then, so fore less fustration simply pay the $20 per year and get a upgraded box. You'll keep you address, not have to ever worry about the pictures, support if you need, which means you can call them and say fix it please, more space, no adds to skip over before you get to your email and other features as well. Each time you try to type the letters/numbers and miss they change to a different set, so if you miss you must start over. This is good for security, but bad for blind people. Go paid and all will be fine. Now my last suggestion may not work, but call MSN, you can get there number from directory assist and ask them sense your a blind person and have trouble with free hotmail, will they give you a paid box free? Can't hurt you know. *smile*
